Why the encoding matters

Real subtitle files are often saved as Windows-1252 (DVD rips) or Shift-JIS / EUC-KR (anime and Korean releases), not UTF-8. Tools that assume UTF-8 silently corrupt accented and CJK characters. We detect the encoding from the byte-order mark or the content, and let you override the charset if a file still looks wrong — so your subtitles stay readable.
